23 of the 27 members of the house voted for the impeachment, hours after the high court in the state dismissed Agbaso’s suit to stop the impeachment.
The impeachment was based on the allegation that the deputy governor collected a bribe of N417 million from a contractor with J-PROS Limited, a construction firm handling the rehabilitation of Sam Mbakwe Road in Owerri, the state capital.
Mr. Agbaso admitted collecting a bottle of blue label Porsche from the contractor but vehemently denied collecting anything else, claiming that the move to impeach him was connected with the impending 2015 election.
Following the impeachment, the speaker read out a letter from Governor Rochas Okorocha where he nominated the Chief of Staff, Eze Madumere, to replace the deputy governor.
Agbaso and Governor Rochas Okorocha were elected on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA in 2011.
