A 47-year-old tricycle operator identified as David (surname withheld) is currently cooperating with the police at the A Division in Asaba, Delta State over his alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl who lives in the same compound with him.

Sources close to the police authorities in the area disclose that the incident occurred on Monday night during the Christmas eve, when residents were in celebratory mood.

Reports indicate that the suspect allegedly tricked the girl to follow him for an outing in the spirit of the season, when he returned to the compound around Ogweolo Quarters, Asaba and met the girl and her friends outside.

The girl with company of her friends (SS I classmates) told her parents that they were going out with the tricycle operator to buy Suya.

But this was not to be as the suspect allegedly fraudulently lured her to a guesthouse after buying Suya (reportedly worth N2500) for them and told her friends that he was taking her out alone for more gifts.

A senior police officer, who did not want his name in the print, confirmed that while her friends left for home, the bubble burst after so much struggle by the suspect to have his way, even after promising to pay the girl N10,000 for her services.

The noise generated by the suspect and the minor attracted the attention of the operators of the guesthouse - who met the girl naked and the suspect too.

The officer said, "They got the suspect beaten and dragged him to the police station where he is presently being detained for further investigations".

Upon interrogation, our informed sources said that the suspect confessed to the crime, claiming that he did not rape the girl but had a consensual sex with her.

Checks revealed that the suspect had been having problems with his wife, a mother of three, over his unbridled libido which was said to had cost him his job at the Delta State owned company, Delta Line, where he was a driver.

Contacted for comment, the police spokesman in the state, DSP Charles Muka said he was yet to be briefed on the issue, disclosing that there had been increase in reported cases of rape in the state in recent times
