Pope Benedict XVI greeted crowds outside the palace at Castel Gandalfo in his final public appearance as pontiff


Pope Benedict XVI has left the Vatican for the final time as leader of the Catholic Church as he has now officially retired.
 
He made the short journey to the papal retreat at Castel Gandalfo, where he appeared on the summer palace's balcony to greet cheering and flag-waving crowds, before he officially ceased to be Pope at 8pm.
 
He became the first pontiff in 600 years to resign.
