Two die, scores injured in NDL explosion

Two persons were feared killed while others were injured on Friday in an explosion that rocked the factory of Nigeria Distillers Limited at Singer Bus Stop on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ogun State.

The explosion was said to have caused panic in the area as residents and workers of other companies came out to the expressway, thinking it was an attack.

A witness, however, told our correspondent that a boiler used in preparing products (alcoholic beverage) of the company exploded.

The witness, who pleaded anonymity because he is a worker in the company said, “When the heater exploded, it affected the gas pipe of the company, which also exploded, killing some of my colleagues and injuring others.”

It was learnt that in a bid to escape from the scene of explosion, some employees of the company climbed a fence, which allegedly collapsed on them.

When our correspondent visited the company, the security men prevented him from entering the premises. They insisted that the fire had been put out.

The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that two people died in the incident.

He said, “Two people died in the incident. Another person was critically injured and is receiving treatment in the hospital.

“The incident was caused by a boiler that exploded at the Nigeria Distillers Limited. However, everything is under control now.”
