Newcastle United, Ba’s current club, have also given Chelsea permission to discuss with the striker.

“Newcastle United can confirm that Chelsea Football Club has made an official offer for Demba Ba which has triggered the release clause in the player’s contract.

“The club has given the player permission to speak to Chelsea FC and therefore he will not be included in the squad for tonight’s game against Everton,” Newcastle stated on its website.

Demba Ba is expected to compete with Fernando Torres for the Chelsea top striker spot.

Ba will also be at his clubside during the African Cup of Nations as Senegal did not qualify for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have also offloaded England striker, Daniel Sturridge, who has now joined Liverpool for a fee believed to be 12 million pounds.

“I am humbled and happy to be here.” The 23-year-old was quoted on the Liverpool website: “I’ve signed to be here for as long as possible. It’s a humongous club – for me, one of the biggest in the world – and to have the fans and world-class players we have here is amazing.”

Among Nigerian stars, only the departure of Rabiu Ibrahim to Kilmarnock has been confirmed.

The skillful midfielder moved to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier League from Celtic on a free transfer.

However, West Bromwich Albion Striker, Osaze Odemwigie is rumoured and highly expected to move to Newcastle.

Osaze will also not be playing at AFCON 2013 as he has been omitted from the squad by Nigerian Coach, Stephen Keshi.
