A 30-year-old boat mending apprentice,
identified as Offonsor Sunday, has clubbed a 65-year-old landlord,
Onesmus Inegitei, to death with a plank.
The incident took place at a construction site in Agbura community of Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
It was learnt that a minor argument led to a brawl between the duo and later led to the landlord’s death.
A source, who craved anonymity, said the
late Inegeite was the owner of a new building under construction in the
area, while Sunday was living with someone in another building said to
be owned by the deceased.
The source said Inegeite was allegedly
killed after directing Sunday to remove a clothe line along the path to
allow workers to move in heavy equipment to the site.
He said Sunday became furious and said things that allegedly angered the deceased.
He said, “Thereafter, an argument ensued
between them. Their heated argument soon attracted workers and other
people to them. Sunday suddenly made for a heavy plank and hit the old
man.
“The old man fell to the ground. He was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.”
An eyewitness, who gave his name as Wole
Adeyinda, said an attempt by the killer to escape after the dastardly
act was thwarted by the agitated crowd who apprehended and later handed
him over to the police.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the corpse had been taken to the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.
A cousin of the deceased and a member of
the Attissa Council of Chiefs, Chief Bedford Okwunu, said the
circumstances surrounding the death of his relative could only be
unravelled by the police.
“We do not want the youths in the area to engage in violence and reprisals,” Okwunu said.
When contacted on the development,
spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, said
he was aware of the incident.
However, Akhigbe said, “An official
brief has not be made to the command by the Divisional Police Officer of
the area. But I am aware of the incident.”
