The United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) representative in Nigeria, Ms Mariam Sissoko yesterday said the number of people trafficked for sex was on the increase.
Sissoko, represented by Ann Ikpeme, made the remarks during one-day training for police officers in charge of Anti-Human Trafficking Unit and Juvenile Welfare Centres at the police headquarters, Abuja.
“Global estimates suggest that 2.5 million people are trafficked annually; sexual exploitation is by far the most common (76 per cent) identified form of trafficking at international levels,’’ she said.
She said that about 2.5 million people trafficked across the globe annually while $3.2 bn is generated by the perpetrators. She said while the illicit acts brought huge profit to traffickers, it consistently brought misery, pains and frustration to the victims.
Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Zainab Maina called for the accelerated implementation of the Child Act Right (CAR) 2003. She said that out of the 23 states that had passed the act only nine had structures for family courts of which two were operational.
Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar said the training was meant to acquaint the officers with global standards of dealing with human trafficking, child abuse and domestic violence against children and women.
