Rare Whale Species Pygmy Sperm Whale Butchered At Lekki Beach

Yesterday a rarely seen Whale specie, Pygmy Sperm for unknown reasons was washed to the shores of Lekki Beach, and butchered by residents.
The ordeal of the unfortunate marine animal was revealed this morning by one Enahoro Edgal, an upwardly mobile Lekki resident, who uploaded the photo on his Facebook wall, with the caption: “This pygmy sperm whale that beached near my house in Lekki was butchered alive yesterday.”

Pygmy Sperm Whale...
In other parts of the world, the Pygmy sperm Whale is a special animal. this is because it is one of three species of toothed whale in the sperm whale family not often sighted at sea. Most of what is known about them comes from the examination of stranded specimens.
Before now, I had never heard of these species of whales, so I did a little checking and here is what I found from
Oceanresearch:

  • Sperm whales are not dangerous to people. They do not break ships apart and swallow sailors whole. In fact, we know a lot about what Sperm whales don't do--but not very much else.

  • Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales on the planet, and perhaps the most abundant of the great whales, but we rarely get to study them because they spend so much time underwater. Sperm whales are deep divers, holding their breath and diving thousands of feet down to feed on deep sea squid and fish. They spend 90% of their lives down deep where they can't be seen. Only rarely do these energetic animals take a break and rest at the surface.
  • Whales might be big, but they aren't easy to find. Sperm whales are even harder to find than other species because they don't stick out of the water very much and their distinctive blow is small and easily missed. Unlike most whales where the spout shoots straight up high into the air, the spout of the Sperm whale is aimed to the left and forward. It doesn't spray up more than six or eight feet, making it hard to spot from a distance.
  • The tooth of a Sperm whale is about 4 inches long, but a big one can be 8 inches long!
  • The Sperm whale gets its name from the spermaceti organ which fills most of its huge head. In the 18th and 19th centuries, New England whalers sought out the Sperm whale for the valuable spermaceti oil, which makes an exceptionally fine lubricant.

Folklore...

Years ago, before the popularity of the internet and social media in Nigeria, I recall a similar occurrence, where a humongous fish(specie unidentified) was washed to the shore of this same Lekki Beach. It was all over the news, and I decided to go see for my self, with some members of my family.

However by the time we were able to go to the scene, we were informed that the fish had been completely butchered by residents. However, I found it strange that there was no trace whatsoever of the fish I had earlier seen on TV, and decided to ask locals about the incident.

What they told me was quite interesting, but until now, I completely forgot about it. I was told that the fish was called 'abubutan', a strange sea species that came ashore every 10 years for it to be butchered by people. On why we couldn't find remains, the locals confidently said that the fish, in its usual way had left the second day after it was convinced that people had had enough. 'Abubutan' is a Yoruba word which they explained to mean that it cant never finish'. As ridiculous as it may seem, many elderly Yoruba people confirm that they've heard similar stories. Have you guys ever heard of anything like this?

Reports have it that the current incident happened close to Eko Atlantic City. It is unclear if the Whale was dead or alive as at the time it was discovered.
