Rainstorm destroys property in Ibadan, renders many homeless

Residents of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital are now counting their losses following the destruction that trailed the rainstorm on Sunday night.
 
Areas that were most hit are Ajegunle, Igodalo, Academy, Omiyale, Olomi,
Olunde, Ayegun, Aba-Alfa, Jaloke, Papa-Eleye, Aladi, Ire-Akari all in Oluyole Local Government of the state.
 
Other areas affected by the rainstorm were Osungbade, Odo-Oba, Idi-Aro, Challenge, Felele, Odo Ona Apata and Odo Ona Elewe.
 
At least, three filling stations were destroyed at Ire-Akari area along Olomi/Academy.
Also destroyed were vehicles parked along the streets.
On Monday when our correspondent went round the city, he observed that roof tops and electric poles were damaged by the rainstorm.
 
Commuters complained of hard times moving out of Amuloko area along Akanran Road in the Ona Ara Local Government as electricity poles belonging to PHCN blocked the road, causing traffic snarl.
 
There were gridlocks around Olunloyo, Target and Olorunsogo areas.
At the Toll Gate area, fuel-dispensing machines were damaged, as well as rooftops of filling stations.
Other affected structures were the Federal High Court building at Ring Road, Orita Challenge Police Division and Asolo Church along Amuloko.
 
The Zonal Public Relations Officer of PHCN, Ibadan Division, Mr. Jide Oyenuga, said, “We are indeed aware of the destruction which the rainstorm has caused in many parts of Ibadan. Our men have swung into action and repairs are already being carried out. Power has been restored around Ring Road as at 10am.
 
“Many of the roofs that were blown off fell on PHCN poles and wires. We are gradually sorting them out. But we are appealing to our customers to please bear with us while we carry out the repairs.”
 
One of those affected, Alhaji Wasiu Ogundare, said, “Where do I start from? It took me so many years to construct this house.”
 
The Police Public Relations Offiicer, Mr. Ayodele Lanade, said, “I cannot confirm anything to you please. I have no power to do so as I have been directed not to confirm any story to any journalist again.”
 
However, the member representing Oluyole Federal Constituency, Dr.Ibrahim Olaifa, said emergency and rescue efforts have been deployed in the communities.
 
In a statement in Lagos on Monday, Olaifa said, “I commiserate with the people of Oluyole constituency and the government of Oyo State. I am aware of the extensive damage to houses, bridges, electrical installations, and other social amenities.
 
“I want to assure them that this unfortunate incident will be brought to the attention of the Federal government and everything will be done to limit their sufferings.”
